Born and raised in western New York state, the artist now lives and works in the metro Washington, D.C. area.
The artist creates pen & ink drawings document the everyday life of the artist and her family. These drawings are drawn both from life and from photographs.
The artist is inspired by the idea of the "fleeting moments" in our daily lives. These are moments in time that seem unimportant ordinary, but are small events in the everyday life that build to become a documentary of human interactions and connections.
Deeply inspired by the loss of history and identity, as well as family connections, the artist creates mixed-media collages and paintings that merge these themes onto the surface of her works. Her intense interests in the natural world (especially birds and animals), as well as her rural, isolated upbringing, are also subjects that inspire her work.
"My themes and concepts generally revolve around social isolation, family history, and trauma. I am especially interested in genealogy research, and with the forgotten women and lives in my family's history. My work reflects a desire to remember them; to document their existence and to honor their life experiences. I am deeply and fundamentally inspired by the Chinese-American artist Hung Liu, among other artists with similar works."
Her latest series of works are called Portraits of My Ancestors. In each work, the artist explores deep familial relationships with found objects that she cuts or tears and continuously glues, paints, and overlaps over one another onto the surface of the work. These objects include copies of baptismal records, hand-written letters, the scribbled drawings that her young son created, copies of photographs, etc. Each object is symbolic (as are the birds she paints, which she refers to as the "masks" of the individual).
