This series of mixed-media works is titled: "Portraits of My Ancestors". In each work, the artist explores deep familial relationships with found objects that she cuts or tears and continuously glues, paints, and overlaps over one another onto the surface of the work. These objects include copies of baptismal records, hand-written letters, the scribbled drawings that her young son created, copies of photographs, etc. Each object, document or photo is significant to the story of the Artist's life, and that of her past and ancestry. Each object is symbolic (as are the birds she paints, which she refers to as the "masks" of the individual). She includes photos of her family members (most long deceased) whose lives she has meticulously researched and explored. They are apart of her; and in these works she explores how their identities mold her own.
